The dealer dropped of my 4110 & picked up the 790. The 790 seemed alot quieter than the 4110 (other than grinding a gear or two). Anyway I was trying to push a downed tree with the loader but the tractor did not have enough ass to move it. It was up against the tree & not moving any further. It was making a pretty strenuous sound. I thought this may be normal for the hydrostatic transmission but was not sure. The 790 was gear drive & did not make any sounds like that. Could it just be a break in noise or is this something that does not sound right. Just looking for some input.

Hydrostatic transmissions often have a whine which gets louder when they're straining. ....

Thats what I thought. Thanks for the fast response. I will have to get used to the sound. It almost sounded to me like it was low on fluid or something but I checked & all levels were ok. The engine sounded good while running. It was just when using the loader. ....

The hydraulic pressure relief valve also will make noise when the pressure limits are exceeded. Maybe that's what you heard. ....

fatboyvc, a good practice is to keep the rpms up at full pto rpm (2600) when you are really calling on the tractor to push the limits. This keeps the hydrostatic pump at maximum efficiency and ability to push hyd. oil. When you hit the limits of the hydrostatic transmission and the engine with respect to loading it down the rpms will RAPIDLY fall off almost to what appears to be stalling the engine if you continue. The 4110 does not have Load Match if I recall correctly (with my CRS that is a 50/50 proposition) ;o) so you need to watch the rpms a bit closer so you don't stall the engine. The hydrostatic trans will definitely whine when you load it to the limits. Much more than it normally does. Sounds to me like you need a lot more tractor or a dozer. ....

I grew up using gear tractors and have to make a concious effort to actually back off the hydro pedal when starting to reach pushing or pulling limits. This directs more torque to the wheels through the drivetrain. It's the opposite of the logic we are used to when using throttles on cars, etc. Also, if the 4110 was not in low range, you'll find the pushing limit before you run out of traction. You probably know all this, so apologies if I'm preaching to the experienced. With my ballasted 4110 in low range 4WD, I typically run out of traction before stalling the machine. Are you using it in high or low range... My 4110 will make a hell of a racket in high... but in low it has more than enough power to move large (whatever large is:)) items.... ....
